We attended the dawn ANZAC Day ceremony at the War Memorial of Korea. There was a huge turnout, between military officers, diplomats & other civilians from Australia & New Zealand, from other countries and of course from the Koreans. There’s a much larger A/NZ presence here than there was in India in the late 1990’s!
HE Bill Patterson, Ambassador of Australia and HE Patrick Rata, Ambassador of New Zealand, each said a few words. I thought that Patrick’s was particularly good. Also, I was pleased and surprised to see the Turks represented there, including a reading of Atatürk’s Ode by Col. Salih Ataman, the Turkish Defense Attaché… We learn something about other countries’ relations every day!
Afterwards was an informal breakfast. The Naval Attachés, bless them, offered a wee drop of rum to brace up the coffee for those who wanted it.
